Freeport is one of the closest islands to Miami and Ft. Lauderdale. It’s just a thirty-minute fight away, meaning it’s an excellent destination for a long weekend or even a week. After spending five days exploring the entire island, we’ve compiled a list of our five favorite things to do in Freeport, the most underrated island in the Bahamas!
Five Things You Must Do in Freeport, Bahamas
Snorkel/Kayak/Blue Hole Tour
If you want to explore secluded beaches, learn about the island’s history, and eat a local meal, this is one the best excursions in Freeport for you. We departed Freeport and went on a fifty-mile drive (it went fast!) east as we learned about the history of the island from our tour guide, Rudy. He took us to the very east side of Freeport to one of the most beautiful, secluded beaches. We then took a kayak tour to explore two blue holes. Afterward, we picked up a local meal and ate on another secluded beach.

Stingray Excursion at Sandy Cay
Ever dreamed of feeding stingrays and swimming with lemon sharks? The thought of it is a lot scarier than it sounds, but when you’re in the hands of Keith with West End Ecology Tours, you know you’ll be just fine. On this Freeport excursion, we set out by boat from Old Bahama Bay, on the west end of Grand Bahama Island, and rode thirty minutes out to Sandy Cay. Sandy Cay is surrounded by shallow, crystal clear blue waters.
Keith is the stingray whisperer. He’ll show you how to pet and feed them. And if you’re lucky, a few of those lemon sharks will make an appearance. We even had a few brush up against us. Just be sure to keep your hands above water, and don’t be scared. If you’re calm, they’ll be calm too!
After spending some time with the stingrays, you’ll head to a nearby shipwreck to snorkel.

Have Dinner at a Fish Fry
If you want a truly local experience, having dinner at Fish Fry is one of the best things to do in Freeport for foodie travelers. They only take place on Wednesday nights, so ensure that your trip planning allows for this. It’s the best opportunity to have conch fritters and local beer. A number of them take place next to each other at Smith’s Point (near Freeport). Be sure to stay past 9 pm when the music gets going. More details here.
Safari Jeep Tour
There’s nothing like the feeling of cruising in a Jeep with the top off. On this tour, you get to explore the central part of the island, see the homes of some of the richest that call the island home and explore the caves and beaches of Grand Lucayan National Park. It even includes a stop at Gold Rock Beach, known as Freeport’s most beautiful beach – our stop there was one of our favorite things to do in Freeport!

Watch the Sunset from Manta Ray Beach Club
If you’re looking to capture a beautiful sunset, Manta Ray Beach Club is a great spot. It’s a beach club so you can dine or enjoy the music. But be sure to get here to enjoy a sunset. The photo opportunities are incredible. Make sure to get there for golden hour so you get that warm, sunset glow.
